As students prepare to graduate high school, the search for colleges can be difficult, but for students in Pennsylvania, you may not have to look much further than your own backyard. Although Ivy League and other private colleges carry a certain prestige along with their histories of educational excellence, Pennsylvania public colleges can also offer top-notch education to students and at a fraction of the cost.

PA State Schools are More Cost Effective

The prestige that comes along with attending a private university comes with a hefty price tag. Private institutions cost an average of $ 35,000 or more – and that’s per year. So the cost of a degree from a private, four-year institution can come at a cost of upwards of $ 140,000. On the other hand, the cost of attending a Pennsylvania state school comes to just over $ 9,000 per year for in-state residents. For students from out of state, the cost can increase to about $ 18,000 per year, but still significantly less than the cost of a private institution.

Greater Diversity

State run Pennsylvania colleges also tend to be larger with much greater diversity in their student populations. Private colleges often lack diversity as nearly 100 percent of their students come from affluent families. At a Pennsylvania state college, you are more apt to find students from every race, religion, culture and from all walks of life.

For students who were not at the top of their class in high school, or even students who may have had relatively poor grades, private school education is out of reach. The admissions standards and process at Pennsylvania state schools tend to me much more flexible, making a college education possible for nearly all students who wish to achieve it.

PA State Schools Are Close to Home

Finally, because Pennsylvania Colleges can be found right in your backyard, you don’t have to go far from home. Because private schools are fewer and far between, attending such an institution often takes students several hours away from home, sometimes even across the country. If proximity to your family and hometown is important for you, there is a PA state college within arm’s reach.

So as you begin researching colleges and universities, remember the benefits of attending a Pennsylvania state college, where you can get a quality education and a memorable college experience that will create memories that last a lifetime.
